New ruling in priority to activate monster’s effect

February 23, 2011

This may not be new to many.

There will be a change in the ruling in activating monster’s effect using turn player priority.

Before change:
Turn player can activate monster’s effect using turn player priority when a monster is summoned.

After change:
Turn player cannot activate monster’s effect using turn player priority when a monster is summoned.

This will take effect on 19 March 2011.

(This is not a direct translation.)

Click here to understand what is ‘priority’. In short, it allows the turn player to stack effect in chain 1.

This ruling mainly changes how ignition effect will be played, and not all effects are affected. To understand the differences in the type of effects, click here.

Example 1 (Ignition effect)

Dark Armed Dragon VS. Bottomless Trap Hole

Before change:
Turn player summons Dark Armed Dragon and chooses to activate Dark Armed Dragon’s effect using priority ruling, then targets another card on the field. Opponent chains with Bottomless Trap Hole.

Chain 1: Dark Armed Dragon’s effect (target and destroy another card)
Chain 2: Bottomless Trap Hole

Resolve backward, Bottomless Trap Hole destroys and removes Dark Armed Dragon from play. Then, another card that is targeted by Dark Armed Dragon’s effect is destroyed.

After change:
Turn player summons Dark Armed Dragon. Opponent chains with Bottomless Trap Hole. Bottomless Trap Hole destroys and removes Dark Armed Dragon from play.

Example 2 (Trigger effect)

Caius the Shadow Monarch VS. Bottomless Trap Hole

Before change:
Turn player normal summons Caius the Shadow Monarch and its effect is triggered, then targets another card. Opponent chains with Bottomless Trap Hole.

Chain 1: Caius the Shadow Monarch’s effect
Chain 2: Bottomless Trap Hole

Resolve backward, Bottomless Trap Hole destroys and removes Caius the Shadow Monarch from play. Then another card that is targeted by Caius the Shadow Monarch’s effect is removed from play.

After change:
Turn player normal summons Caius the Shadow Monarch and its effect is triggered, then targets another card. Opponent chains with Bottomless Trap Hole.

Chain 1: Caius the Shadow Monarch’s effect
Chain 2: Bottomless Trap Hole

Resolve backward, Bottomless Trap Hole destroys and removes Caius the Shadow Monarch from play. Then another card that is targeted by Caius the Shadow Monarch’s effect is removed from play.

(It remains the same after the change in ruling)

This ruling changes the game.

Most cards with ignition effect are weakened. There is a high chance that a turn player does not have the opportunity to activate the effects. There will be a ‘time frame’ which opponent can interrupt before the turn player has the luxury to activate ignition effect. This also means that cards that can interrupt at that ‘time frame’ are stronger after the change.

Examples:
– Bottomless Trap Hole
– Trap Hole
– Book of Moon
– Compulsory Evacuation Device
– Chain Disappearance

In a way, it simplifies the game. At the same time, it changes the turn player advantage in YuGiOh.

P.S. I just moved back to Brisbane, so I don’t have internet service for last 5 days. Gonna move to another place on Monday again.
